Project Goal: A new pond is being constructed at the southeast corner of the Zuni Road and Pennsylvania Street intersection to address peak capacity issues within the Dallas Storm Drain System. The new pond will have an approximate depth of 14 feet and have a volume of approximately 15 acre-feet. Storm drain connections and improvements will occur within both adjacent roadways. The pond, scheduled to be completed in May 2026, will be fenced and gated.
April 2026 Construction Update: The bulk of the work at the Zuni-Pennsylvania Detention Pond in April was the construction of the pond slopes and the connection of the storm drains. To construct the slopes, Compass installed shotcrete. As shown in the photo below, the shotcrete connects the toe wall to the top of the slope. At this time, all of the shotcrete is installed except for a section at the northeast corner of the site. The inlets and outlets of the pond are also now fully connected to the storm drain system. The closure the eastbound lane of Zuni Rd SE continues as Compass wraps up the manhole and waterline work.

March 2026 Construction Update: The cast-in-place concrete decorative wall panels are nearly completed along the west, east, and north sides of the project. In the future, these panels will be connected by metal fencing, but until then the chain link fence will stay in place to provide site security. The toe wall is also nearly complete, and Compass is starting work on installing pipes to tie the pond into the storm drain system. The eastbound lanes of Zuni Road SE adjacent to the project will be closed for approximately 8 weeks starting on March 30th to facilitate this work.

February 2026 Construction Update: Excavation for the pond began in December 2025 and is now complete. Compass is in the process of building the concrete toe wall to reinforce the slopes. The CMU (concrete masonry unit) wall on the south side of the site is completed. Concrete footings are being poured for the decorative walls along the west, east, and north sides of the project.
